Homeschooling For New York Families

Families residing within the state of New York should in search of an online school recognized by the state of New York should know the following:

The IVLA Process For New York Based Families

Contact your local school board and/or school to both withdraw your child from school and request the required documents for home schooling. Upon withdrawing your child from school, you will then have four (4) weeks to complete these documents and submit them to your school district.
Begin IVLA’s application process and the selection of courses that meet the requirements of your state. You can find your course requirements here:

IVLA will provide both the tools and support needed to obtain the syllabi and any required reports. Note that you are required to complete and sign the documents provided to you by your district. Also, note that IVLA cannot deliver these documents to the appropriate agency on your behalf.
Decide on either in-home or public-school annual assessments, which are required at the end of each school year. These annual tests must be arranged by the student’s guardian as IVLA does not provide annual end of year assessments. You can learn more here: www.p12.nysed.gov/part100/pages/10010.html#h
Your children are eligible to attend International Virtual Learning Academy (IVLA) to obtain their education and high school diploma.
The state of New York does not recognize online schools that are not located within the state of New York as “traditional” schools.
New York based students that are enrolled in an online school that is NOT located within the state of New York are classified as “home schooled” and must follow New York state homeschooling laws.
IVLA is, and has been, the online school for many New York based families and students.

New York FAQs

What is independent study?
Independent study is a course you would take traditionally at home as a typical homeschool course. This means you are responsible for the records, quarterly reports, and completion. If you want to add on an independent study, we can provide you with a packet to help guide you in the process.
Does my student have to take the Regents Exams?
No. Regent exams are only required for students graduating with a New York diploma within the state of New York. Students graduating from IVLA will have to complete the following graduation requirements:

Does my New York student have to take annual assessments?
Yes. In accordance with the laws of the state of New York, you are required to complete annual assessments either at home or at a local school. You can learn more here: www.p12.nysed.gov/part100/pages/10010.html#h
Does IVLA provide its students with social activities within the state of New York?
No. We recommend that all IVLA students check with their local homeschool co-ops for home school related social activities.
Can my student go to a New York college upon graduating from IVLA?
Yes, your student will be eligible to go to New York based colleges.
Is IVLA located in the state of New York?
IVLA is not located in the state of New York, but students from New York may attend our school.
How do I get quarterly reports?
Full-time New York students will have a coach to assist you with this process. IVLA’s entire process is online, which puts all of our resources at your fingertips.
Does IVLA complete your homeschool documents and submit them on your behalf?
No. State laws require the student’s guardian to complete all required documents and then submit them to the appropriate agencies in accordance with stated deadlines.
Is IVLA approved by the state of New York?
